Local
singer-songwriter David James McUne will entertain before a John
Anderson concert on June 14 at the Renfro Valley Entertainment Center in Kentucky. McUne sang his way to the privilege, and a standing
ovation, at the Renfro Valley Country Talent Contest in April.
"When
they said West Union, I didn't remember anything else," McUne said
about the night he won the trophy. His performance had been the eighth
of the day out of 42 finalists. The finalists were chosen to compete at
Renfro Valley out of approximately 500 contestants who entered samples
of their singing ability earlier in the year.
McUne selected Tim
McGraw's "If You're Reading This" for his contest performance. There
were three judges in the audience scoring contestants in six different
categories: talent, tightness of performance, crowd response,
appearance, stage presence and star quality.
"I've been singing
since I was four or five," said McUne. "I used to sing on a Sunday
morning broadcast in Indiana that my grandparent did. It was through
church that I really got started singing. I really didn't get into my
music until about two years ago."
Now McUne says he plays guitar
and writes music. The songs he has written speak about life's
experiences and include titles such as "Brown Bottle Blues," "Night, It
Falls" and "Gotta Be Tough." One of his songs, "Circumstance" is about
a young woman found dead in Adams County, who left behind a
four-year-old child. He's been working to put together a 12-song CD.
"I
just love music," said McUne, who works with sheet metal and commercial
ductwork for a living. "When we were at Renfro Valley, a group of us
got together on the front porch of the hotel and were playing music. It
was a lot of fun."
One of McUne's songs will be played on 100.7
FM WCYO out of Richmond, Kentucky as a result of his contest win. He
also received a $500 gift certificate to be used at the Renfro Valley
Recording Studio.

Anderson concert may be obtained by calling Renfro Valley at (800)

McUne lives three miles from West Union
with his wife, Lori (Rideout) McUne, and four boys. He moved to Adams
County 20 years ago from Kentucky.
